Visualizing Video Game Sales Data
My Journey Learning Tableau: Visualizing Video Game Sales Data
Recently, I started learning Tableau, and to practice, I worked on a dataset about video game sales across different platforms and genres. It was my first hands-on experience creating visualizations, and I was amazed by how intuitive and powerful Tableau is for data analysis.
What I Created
I built two main visualizations:
Line Graph: showing global sales trends over time, categorized by game genre. This helped me see how the popularity of different genres (like Action, Sports, and Shooter) changed over the years.
Bar Graph: showing regional and global sales distribution, allowing comparisons between continents such as Europe and North America.
Both charts were combined into a dashboard that provides an interactive overview of the video game market.
What I Learned
While working on this project, I learned several key Tableau concepts:
-
How to build dashboards that combine multiple visualizations and provide interactive insights.
-
Using Marks: adjusting color, size, shape, and labels to make visuals clearer and more engaging.
-
Creating Bins: to group continuous data (like years) into intervals for better trend analysis.
-
Quick Table Calculations: to quickly compute metrics such as running totals and percentages.
Key Takeaway
This project helped me understand how visual analytics can turn raw data into meaningful stories. Tableau makes it easy to explore trends and patterns interactively, and I’m excited to keep learning more advanced techniques like calculated fields and parameters next.
